Hale Boggs Bridge

Project Details

Williams Brothers was contracted by the Louisana Department of Transportation and Development to construct this 10,700 foot long bridge over the Mississippi River. The first cable stayed bridge to be added to the Interstate Highway System, the bridge features unpainted weathering steel towers and superstructure, an orthotropic steel box girder superstructure, and two planes of cables in a fan pattern.

The 72 stay cables are arranged in 24 groups of either 2 or 4 cables. Each tower has 12 groups of cables, 6 groups on each side of the bridge deck. The stay cables are woven from 1/4-inch diameter wire. Individual cables have between 103 and 307 strands of wire.

At 76 feet wide, the bridge comprises four lanes, two shoulders and one divider, and is suspended 155 feet above the water. The entire bridge has almost two miles of elevated structure. The suspended spans include a 1,200 foot span over the river navigation channel, plus side spans of 495 feet and 508 feet.
