TxDOT awarded Williams Brothers the project to construct the IH 410 at US 281 Interchange, what was then the largest project built by the San Antonio District. The project involved a fully directional interchange with eight direct connectors built within the existing right of way. The project featured seven other grade separations that were constructed in phases. It features 315,000 square feet of retaining walls, 340,000 tons of asphalt paving and 46,000 linear feet of storm sewer. Project challenges included its adjacent proximity to the San Antonio International Airport to work around arriving planes in their glide path and to maintain vehicular access while building the eight connectors. The project dealt with contaminated soil as well as off site drainage issues. Williams Brothers bid to complete the project 20 months faster than the second bidder in the A + B delivery method. Work began in July 2005 and was completed in 31 months.
